Whilst blackout regulations were enforced and air raid sirens wailed, for some the show continued. Theatres were requisitioned as shelters and performances continued. Luxurious hotels transformed their basement levels into ‘air raid shelters’ complete with cabaret tables, acts and bars. At some venues performances continued only to be halted by a direct hit.
This evening the sirens have gone off again, those frequenting the Stanley Halls have been ushered downstairs to the ‘shelter’. The drinks are flowing and the piano is playing. They may be missing a few actors but the Maitre D’ is sure they can still manage to stage their scheduled show for their guests, with just a few tweaks. Yes, they have left the real set and props upstairs, but they’ll manage.
So ladies and gentlemen, don your vintage glad rags, book up a table, pack up your troubles and smile!
