IntroductionSouth London Theatre Wardrobe has tens of thousands of items of clothing and costumes. Our collection spans the centuries and the cultures, from Greek tunics to medieval tabards and Elizabethan doublet and hose, from Victorian dresses to Edwardian blazers and late twentieth century fashion - taking in uniforms and armour, period underwear and pantomime dames along the way! We provide costumes for SLT productions and hire costumes to many other amateur, fringe and professional companies, theatrical and operatic, as well as schools and individual performers. Our costumes have appeared on films and in productions across London, at the Edinburgh Festival and all over the world. Some of the recent productions we have helped to dress include: Hamlet, Daisy Pulls It Off, Marat/Sade, Oliver!, Pygmalion, The Importance of Being Earnest and Dracula. Back to topThe CollectionThe wardrobe collection has developed over a number of years, we occupy three large rooms within the theatre and are now 'bursting at the seams.' As well as a huge collection of period costumes, we can provide accessories such as petticoats, gloves, all manner of headwear, shoes, jabots, stocks and collars, bags, braces, straightjackets and wigs. We also have a number of collections of costumes which were made for an entire show, these include, Cabaret, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Sweet Charity, The Beggar's Opera and Mort. A large number of the costumes have been made bespoke and in-house. In addition to these we receive many donations and others have been bought specifically for a production. Back to topHow to HireYou will find our rates extremely competitive and our staff helpful. Charges are calculated per item and per week. Whilst there is a standard tariff, prices reflect the rarity and craftsmanship in a costume. We take two cheques, one which we cash and one which we keep as a deposit and which is returned to you. Since many of the items are fragile or unique, we reserve the right to charge extra for the difficult to replace items. We ask our customers not to make any alterations without consulting us and to only make temporary changes and easily reversible. Costumes should be returned in the same condition as when they are hired. Since some items are very old or made up of a variety of fabrics, we prefer to arrange cleaning ourselves. Depending upon the circumstances, this may be taken out of the deposit charge which we levy on every hire. The Wardrobe department is open every Tuesday from 7.30pm and is staffed by volunteers who bring with them extensive experience and knowledge of backstage work. Back to topContact Us
