Father of Lies

by Anna Rubincam
Director: Chaz Doyle

Performances:    May 14-18, 2019
First rehearsal: March 10, 2019

A new pope has been elected.  Patrick I, the first Irish pope in history and the youngest in recent memory.  He is an unexpected choice, young and progressive, with unconventional and even radical ideas to help move the Church into the modern era. But having reached the highest position in the Church, the new Holy Father must pass one final test before he can take office – a meeting, over one entire night, alone in a secret chapel, with someone that his advisors won’t name. It is a meeting that every pope has attended when they were first elected, allegedly going all the way back to St Peter.  No pope has ever spoken about what was discussed. Once morning comes, like his predecessors, Patrick will be able to begin his papacy with the confidence that he is truly worthy of the holiest position. He must remember two things: hold fast to your faith and never let your guard down.

Pope Patrick I  (M – 40s) Irish. Fit and progressive.
Georges (M – 60-plus) European. Archbishop and papal secretary.
Connor (M – 30s) Irish. Papal valet.
Woman (F – 20s) Irish.
