by Tom Basden
Director: Naomi Liddle

Performances:  February 18-22, 2020
First rehearsal: 8 December, 2019

Ian, Gus and Marie are on their way to a marketing conference in Australia when their plane crashes and they find themselves stranded on a desert island. Along with Erin, a teenager who has lost her parents in the crash, they must find a way to survive on only their wits, duty free goods and several packets of aeroplane snacks. Surely somebody will find them. Planes don’t just disappear, do they? And if no-one’s coming … what do they do now? As hope of rescue is dramatically extinguished, tensions rise to crisis point and some very dark decisions must be made. And just where are the tiny Heinekens?

I’m excited to be continuing the SLT love affair with Tom Basden with this pitch-black, razor-sharp comedy. It’s a tight four-hander and will need a team that can work together well. I’ll be looking for sharp comic timing, especially from the ‘adult’ characters, and the ability to make the most of the dryly funny dialogue is a must. A dark sense of humour will stand you in good stead as some fairly bleak subject matter is treated with Basden’s trademark lack of deference.

Please note these are playing ages, not necessarily your actual age. The men need to be convincingly at early mid-life-crisis point.

IAN (M, 30 – 45): Self-appointed leader, pompous and Brent-ishly awkward. Has spent his whole life worrying about his career and now sees the opportunity to unleash his inner Bear Grylls, albeit quite ineffectively. Very much not the sort of person you’d want to be stranded on a desert island with. Ian and Gus have worked together for eight years.

GUS (M, 30 – 45): A realist and latterly family man, Gus deals with the situation sensibly by hunkering down to get drunk on as much duty free booze as he can salvage, while snarking relentlessly at Ian’s attempts to rebuild civilisation.

MARIE (F, 30+): HR director Marie is just happy to be able to get some sun. A life defined by gossip magazines and house prices, there’s room for pathos as well as laughs. Playing age is variable on this – needs to be at least the same age as the men but could be played older than them as a bit of a cougar type.

ERIN (F, 16): Erin is a quiet and pragmatic teenager who lost her parents in the crash. Possibly the most sensible of everyone on the island. NOTE: due to the subject matter, I would prefer the actor to be 18+ with a young playing age.
