Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell

by Keith Waterhouse
Director: Charlotte Benstead

Performances:    July 14-18, 2020
First rehearsal: May 10, 2020

SYNOPSIS
Jeffrey is locked in his favourite pub and spends the time reminiscing about his life and loves. A journalist, gambler and womanising hardened drinker, Bernard was a national treasure. The play is a collection of Jeffrey Bernard’s autobiographical musings and memories of a Soho that has now disappeared – a love letter to the London lost and the pub culture of the last century.

Jeffrey Bernard auditions – Sunday 19 April

Playing age over 50 and must look like he has spent too long in smoke-filled drinking dens.

Notes

First, Jeffrey Bernard is over the age of 50 – so it is imperative you look old enough to play the part. Please send us a headshot. We will only call people to audition who we feel can convincingly play a 50-plus alcoholic. Please note this is not your cue to stop reaching for the “Just For Men” or start on a vodka-only diet to try and go for the “method” approach to cirrhosis. Sometimes it’s just not your gig!

Second, we will be booking individual 20-minute slots on Sunday 19 April. So if we think you look the part we will be in touch to allocate you a timeslot.

Third – and most important – Jeffrey has a lot of lines. We mean a lot. We will not be able to get all we need to out of the rehearsal process if actors are struggling to learn their lines. So for the audition process we want you to learn Audition Piece 1 and then choose either Audition Piece 2 or 3 to learn.

We will be judging you on this, there will be no prompts. Points will be deducted for fluffing and unconvincing improvisation. Sorry it’s a pain but it is really, really important that you can show us you can learn lines.

Please send your headshot to the director. We anticipate there will be callbacks.

Supporting cast auditions – Monday 20 April

We are looking for up to six people (men and women) to play Jeffrey’s associates/policemen/wives/landladies/jockeys/poets/actors and provide a fun and interactive experience for the audience. People over the age of 30 please and priority will be given to members who have volunteered for us over the past year. In particular we need:
* A man who can play the piano
* A woman who can do a Canadian accent

There will be lots to do in this very interactive and immersive show so extroverts only please.

Please make a copy of this form, complete it by 10 April and email it to the director if you want to come to the audition.

Your audition will be confirmed by 13 April.
