Lunch Girls

First rehearsal: February 16, 2021

SYNOPSIS

It’s the mid 1980s and a group of women are trying to arrange, by phone, to have lunch together, but life keeps getting in the way! We listen in to their calls as they voice their problems and concerns and we discover what goes on behind the scenes for “ladies who lunch”.*
This is a one-act play written in segments (rather than scenes) that are a series of phone calls of varying lengths between the different characters over a period of months. It is a sometimes amusing and occasionally sad slice of life as we realise that isolation is not necessarily a new thing but being able to communicate with friends is a lifeline.

*Trigger warning: does discuss infertility issues, infidelity and possible lesbian relationship*

Characters
These women are in their mid-30s to mid-40s – ages given are all approximate. They are middle-class/”Home Counties” ladies who have given up work to be full-time wives and (for some) mothers. Their lives centre around their families, with the occasional local protest meeting as a distraction, and they probably only know each other from living in the same area.

Vee: 42-44 (the eldest) – no children, resentfully cares for her elderly disabled mother-in–law
Bee: 38-40 – two daughters at school, organised but not as much as she could be
Jay: 35-38 – five sons at school, always seems rushed, in love with Dee
Dee: 30-35 (the youngest) – no children (yet), does occasional research work, can be bitchy
