Picnic at Hanging Rock
by Tom Wright, based on the book by Joan Lindsay
Director: Barry Hooper
Performances: June 16-20, 2020
First rehearsal: April 19, 2020
On St Valentine’s day 1900 a group of schoolgirls from Appleyard College set out for a picnic at Hanging Rock, a volcanic beauty spot in rural Victoria, Australia. Their idyllic day turns to nightmare as three of their number inexplicably vanish, never to be seen again.
Five female school student narrators recount the mystery of the disappearance and the looming hysteria as the illusion of genteel society is torn apart. An edgy and mysterious play that requires precision performances.
One act, no interval.
Five female actors, playing age 20-30, portray all the roles, both male and female. All the girls are played with soft Australian accents. Miss McGraw is Scottish, Mademoiselle is French, and Michael Fitzhubert and Mrs Appleyard are upper-class English. All the other roles have stronger Australian accents.
Girl One Harriet, Albert, Mademoiselle
Girl Two Arielle, Miss McGraw, Sara, Edith, Doctor, Nurse
Girl Three Amber, Michael Fitzhubert
Girl Four Elizabeth, Mrs Appleyard, Police Tracker
Girl Five Nikki, Policeman, Irma, Gardener
