The Memory of Water
by Shelagh Stephenson
Director: Charlotte Benstead
Performances: August 24-28, 2021
First rehearsal: June 27, 2021
AUDITION SLOTS FULLY BOOKED
Three sisters gather in their family home for the funeral of their mother. Strung out, sleep deprived and suffering from insecurities, they reminisce and try to make sense of their memories and how their relationships have shaped them. This is a dark comedy that moves between blisteringly funny and deeply moving.
We are looking for four women and two men
Vi: 55-plus – she’s mostly dead but comes back to visit her old bedroom as if in preparation for the rest of her journey. A no-nonsense apparition who is still giving advice from beyond the grave.
The three sisters – ages will be between 28-40
Teresa – still suffering from middle-child syndrome despite entering her middle age. Bitter about having to have looked after Vi. Over-organised and bossy. Gets drunk.
Catherine – the youngest and still footloose and fancy-free. Lost in her own world and wondering why her relationships don’t work out and how much therapy she should have to sort herself out.
Mary – workaholic successful doctor with a secret past and present.
Frank – husband of Teresa. Trying to make a success of his own business. Used to the sisters and their odd ways. Solid and reliable.
Mike – lover of Mary. Living a double life.
All the female characters smoke and/or drink at some point in the show.
