The Night Heron

by Jez Butterworth
Director: Lisa Thomas

Performances:    October 8-12, 2019
First rehearsal: August 11, 2019

As reports of a rare heron draw birdwatchers to the Fens, two former Cambridge University gardeners, Wattmore, a religious fanatic, and Griffin, hide out in a remote cabin, renting a room to the formidable Bolla Fogg, an ex-convict. They dream of a cash prize for winning the university poetry competition. Rich with Jez Butterworth’s superlative dialogue, the story weaves kidnap, a possible Messiah and the mysteries of the countryside into an eccentric and intoxicating brew.

Jess Wattmore – 35+ A former Cambridge University gardener – fragile, fanatical, probably suicidal. Major role.
Griffin – 35+ A former Cambridge University gardener – more down-to-earth than Wattmore but not averse to a bit of criminality. Major role.
Bolla Fogg – 30+ An ex-con (female). A substantial presence – the script implies that she is physically large, but a lot of attitude may suffice. Major role.
Neddy Beagle – any age, ideally a big or tall man. A former colleague of Wattmore and Griffin. Minor role.
Royce – 30+. A policeman. Takes his job very seriously. Major role.
Boy – 20-ish. Beautiful. Appears naked. Minimal dialogue.
Dougal – Any age. The leader of a local religious cult. Minor role.
Birdwatcher – Any age. Minimal dialogue.
