Subject: BPT Update Nov 2018 - by: Lots29 Hello all – here is a quick one to let you know what the BPT team have been up to this month.

Building Stuff- You would have seen some more essential works happening. We reported in the summer that we had an extremely generous donation and Bex has been putting it to excellent use. We now have spaces safe & ready for hire.  We are looking at some change of use permissions for the top floor. We are currently licenced for it to be residential. We would like this to be a flexible office space. We need the kitchen to be registered for food preparation to support any future café function.

Room Hire Policy– thanks for your feedback on this so far. We now have a draft policy that GC will be looking at next week.  One thing we want to make clear is that although we do have a commitment to open the space, and a financial liability to cover, we went through the refurbishment to ensure SLT’s future. The SLT’s use and programme is, and always will be, the priority.  We just need to use the space outside of the SLT core hours more commercially.

The fire station welcome  - Some of our front line volunteers will be working with “Boo Productions” over next week-end to look at our members and customer journey – I know, don’t worry, we aren’t going to start saying “Have a nice day” but we really we do want people using the building, be it for a show, a workshop, a wardrobe visit to have the same welcome & hopefully want to join up and be more involved.  It is the first time we have had to deal with the general public who are not necessarily visiting to see a show. We have some places on this session Sunday 18th Nov from 11am. If you regularly volunteer for us and want to come along and share your experiences of dealing with the general public email  Lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day.

Marketing– We have agreed with our funders that the business plan we are developing will have our marketing plan embedded in it. Watch this space for a new website, promo materials for wardrobe, room hire, family activities and even a funky digital screen.

Daytime & other activities have been part of the programme of events we have committed to delivering until June 2019 and here’s what is happening before Christmas. Bookings and enquiries can be made through or by

Write Club- This starts 15th Nov! We have managed to secure a great tutor for this 5 week play writing project. The course is subsidised by the HLF, so if you have not booked – BOOK ! This price is a one-time offer unless we can secure additional funds.  No experience necessary, just bring your ideas and a pen.

Teacher event  -  We will be hosting a night for local teachers who will get a tour of the building, a free copy of our magnificent book for their library and an invite to our school sessions. We are providing our hard-working teachers a mulled wine and a mince pie or two for their efforts. If you are, or know a local teacher, please let us know.

Kids stuff !-  There is already a great programme for under 5’s happening every week. Baby dance, story time and “Singing maracas” offer the chance to learn tunes from around the world.

Finally - ! Fundraising  We have some more funding applications pending.  If you are interested in helping out please drop us a line !

Sorry – much longer than we thought….. There’s so much happening. Exciting isn’t it !

Love The BPT team

Subject: Membership Promotion - by: Guy Dingstar If you've ever wondered what the different Membership types are, how much they cost and what benefits you get. There is a handy poster, which should always be on the front desk in the foyer in full view of every prospective member. (There is also one in the bar)

Can I ask politely that it is never moved from a prominent position on the front desk, as it is an important piece of Membership promotion. It keeps ending up on the piano, often hidden by other articles placed in front. It is not large or obstructive and there should always be room for it, even (and especially!) when the front desk is in use.

Thank you

Subject: Building Preservation Trust update - Sept 2018 - by: Lots29 Update from the Building Preservation Trust.

This is a quick update about some of the work the Building Preservation Trust have been doing over the summer.  As well as the opening events we had our AGM and all the trustees have stayed in post. They are Bob Callender, Geoff Lill, Lisa Thomas, Philip Spedding, Charlotte Benstead, Chris Stooke, Carole Coyne, Chaz Doyle, & Fiona Daffern.

We are delighted to have received a private donation making it possible to complete the remaining building works on the 1st and 2nd floors so they are safe and usable for outside bookings and rehearsals. Our donor wishes to remain anonymous, but we are so grateful and were overwhelmed by the generosity.  The financial pressures are by no means over as we have some large bills to cover this year, but this donation means we will be able to generate extra income from room hire.

Now the building is open, we are looking at our structures and governance across all areas of the building.  Over the coming months we will be working with Eve Salomon, who is one of our business mentors, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  Along with a small group of members, she will be reviewing our governing documents and tightening up our bye-laws. We were recommended to apply for additional funding to help us with this process and in July the Heritage Lottery Fund approved a grant of just over £60,000 through their “Resilience” grant scheme. The grant will fully fund a review of the structures, governance and operations for the organisation as a whole (SLT and the BPT) and the production of a business plan.

Any proposed changes to our governance will be consulted on, and we will hold an Extra Ordinary General meeting to approve any amendments.  This will be in the new year with plenty of notice.

Some of General Council past and present with our staff members joined us for an away day where we started to shape our vision of the future. This will be used to help with business planning and prepare us for our operational challenges that come with more activity and longer opening hours.

We also have Janet Vitmayer on hand, who was made a Dame in the Queen’s birthday honours this year. She brings with her 20 plus years’ experience of running the Horniman Museum and is a local resident.  She is our HLF approved consutant and will work with us over the next 8 months.

If you would like to know more about the review or think you have some skills and the capacity to help with our business planning and policy review, please let us know. Email

Meanwhile, please keep telling your friends and neighbours about our wonderful space and shows.

Subject: Alan Slater - by: JLH I have just heard the shocking and extremely sad news that Alan Slater was found dead in his flat this morning. It's thought that he had had a heart attack. Although he had had some heart problems previously, he had taken early retirement last year, and had been enjoying a less stressful pace of life since then.

Alan joined SLT in 1976 and was an active member until 2000. He served as Theatre Director from 1993-1994. He was a very talented actor who took on straight as well as comedy roles and excelled at both. These ranged from Kev in Gimme Shelter, and Fak in The Sport of My Mad Mother to Bardolf in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Bill in An Evening with Gary Linecar and Alan Gregg in Shadowlands. He had a charming and friendly personality and was always good company, with a wicked sense of humour. He got on well with everybody and will be much missed.

He rejoined SLT in 2016 and operated lights for several shows at Stanley Halls, and did FoH as well, as he was always willing to take on new ventures.

Subject: SLT Reunion for past members - Saturday 15th Sept - by: JLH SLT REUNION FOR PAST MEMBERS - SAT 15TH SEPT - 4pm onwards

On Saturday 15th September, next Saturday, the SLT bar will be playing host to a reunion of past members, some of whom actually helped to start the theatre in 1967. SLT today thrives because of all those past members from 1967 onwards who created such a creative theatrical community. Whenever you joined, if you haven't been back for a while, do come and join us in a reunion social, celebrating the refurbished building, meeting old friends,  reminiscing about previous times, and re telling all those slanderous anecdotes which couldn't be put in the book!

Yes, SLT's publication of The Old Fire Station 1881 -2018 A History, will be on sale for the bargain price of £10, and is full of information, entertainment and photographs throughout. Do buy one to take home.

The reunion will start with a social for the original and past members in the bar from 4pm onwards, Later this will be open to current members who will be arriving to celebrate the evening birthday celebration of 2 members, and who will be very interested to meet past members and hear their stories. The past members will be welcome to stay as long as they wish. The bar closes at 11pm.

The guests will be able to explore the building and see which parts they recognise and which are brand new. This includes seeing the set for the forthcoming show, Nell Gwynn, in our brand new theatre space with the most comfortable seats we've ever had! How many faces can you recognise in the foyer collage?

So, come and join us for a very enjoyable afternoon remembering the "old days" and catching up on all the news. Bruce Murray is over from New Zealand, so has come the farthest of any, but we have people arriving from Norfolk, Broadstairs, East Sussex, Deal and Eastbourne so do come and join them for a very enjoyable afternoon in SLT's 51st year.

You won't be able to miss the entrance, as you'll be entering through the original red fire doors at the front of the building.

See you there!

Subject: THANK YOU! From all the Fest Norwood team x - by: bexLaw Hi everyone,
Just a little note to say a huge thank you to everyone that helped out with Fest Norwood - we're still crunching the numbers but it's safe to say a huge number of the local community engaged with SLT for the first time (or at least the first time since we re-opened), and I've heard rumours of record breaking bar takings. :-)

Subject: SLT FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE 2018/2019 - by: Chris Learmonth South London Theatre Fantasy Football Premier League 2018/19

Quite a few members have played Fantasy Football over the past 10 years, and it's been quite fun, however the more people that join in, the better it'll be.

1) It's free to play

2) You don't need to know anything about football to join in

3) It only takes a couple of minutes to submit a team

4) It's all done on the computer (no actual running about is necessary)

5) If you're interested, it's best to join before this Friday 10th August (as that's when the Premier League kicks off, and you'll start scoring points)

If you want to join in, but aren't sure what you're supposed to be doing, drop me an email and i'll be happy to help you out.

Joining the league couldn't be easier. Simply use this link and you'll be added automatically after you've entered the game:

You shouldn't need the league code, but just in case here it is: 794574-177145.

NOTE - If you played in the league last year, you'll automatically be entered into this years league once you create your team.

Enjoy the game.
