TOPIC: AGM and Elections

AGM and Elections 8 months, 1 week ago #1

Your quick guide to General Council !

It is AGM time once again and as well as celebrating our 50th year we will be holding elections for the members of General Council.  Ever wondered what it is all about – here’s your quick guide !

What is the General Council  ? The General Council are 12 elected members who volunteer to run the organisation.  They are legally responsible for making sure we are complaint with charity and company law and make sure we operate within our objectives.

What do they all do ?  There are number of roles.
Chairman – Holds the whole thing together, chairs the  General Council meetings, and acts as the public face of the SLT and the buck stops with them.

Deputy Chairman – Supports the Chairman and deputises in their absence

General Secretary  Manages diary and minutes the meetings, recommends and tracks policy changes

Theatre Directors – There are 4 of these positions. This team is responsible for choosing the season and the artistic programming of SLT

General Stage Manager – Oversees the technical and stage management aspects of the programme

Membership Director – Manages and processes membership & team of volunteers who run membership nights. Deals with membership queries

Public Relations Director – Arranges all press and publicity for shows and events and oversees the website and social media

Director without Portfolio – Our extra pair of hands to assist the Theatre directors and others as necessary

Training Director – Position for Youth Group manager

How much time do the roles take ?  The roles vary and occasionally in times of emergency or for special occasions you will need to commit more time. Each member has to prepare for and attend a monthly meeting. This is about 4 hours a month. Then each role has a number of tasks. Some roles are more time intensive than others & some can manage a team of volunteers to help.   If you are interested in a specific role you can email here or talk to the current post holder.

How do I stand for election ? – Find a member to nominate you ! Complete a nomination form with your name and membership number and the name and membership number of the person willing to nominate you. You both have to have been full or honorary members for at least 6 months to be eligible. Email them to charlotte@southlondontheatre.co.uk  or post to Charlotte Benstead - PM me for details

Are there any legal requirements ?  Yes, as a member of General Council you will need to be registered as a Director of the company and listed as a trustee with the Charity Commission. There are laws about who can be a trustee and company director.  These are:
