Aladdin by Stuart Draper
Performances 3rd - 16th December 2007

Auditions: 13th, 14th & 15th August, 8pm South London Theatre

A traditional panto with a few sneaky twists, ALADDIN is written and directed by Stuart Draper (Stay With Me, Departure Lounge, The Ten Percenters). A dream team has been assembled and this year's panto will be by far the BIGGEST and BRIGHTEST to date.

With all the show-stopping audacity of Sleeping Beauty, and the colour and pathos of Christmas Carol, ALADDIN is set to play for 13 nights in December.

We're looking for plenty of people for chorus, swing and principal roles. The role of Aladdin and the Princess will be youth roles as they need a playing age of 16. They will be expected to audition on the dates below. CHILDREN'S CHORUS AUDITIONS WILL TAKE ON 11th August, CLICK HERE

All principals need a reasonable singing voice and you will be asked to sing at your audition. Please bring sheet music or a backing track. Please also wear comfortable clothing suitable for dancing and jumping up and down in.

Please note that SLT is a private members' club - if cast you must join as a member in order to be eligible to perform. See below for details.

Cast:

Alan Laddin, father to Aladdin (M) Small role, but lots of pathos. Will double as chorus member throughout.
Aladdin/Arthur (15/16 playing age) (M) Principal character, typical school boy, falls in love with a princess, becomes the richest man in the world and brings back the dead.
Arthur's Mum (F) (Small role, good singing voice, appears throughout singing)
Widow Twankey (M/F) The DAME!
Jiminy Picket, a policeman (M/F) Comedy duo
Bob Scratchit, another policeman. (M/F) Other half of comedy duo
The Slave of the Ring (F) - A beautiful Genie, must have good singing voice. She is in love with Rum Baba, the Genie of the Lamp.
The Evil Vizier Abanazer (M) A baddie part to play with relish!
The Lord High Eminent Emperor, Ruler of All China, The Seven Seas and Much of the Conurbation of the West Midlands (M)
The Lady High Even-more Eminent Empress, Ruler of all the above and More (M/F)
Princess Jasmine (F) Playing age 16, NOT your typical principal girl, falls in love with Aladdin/Arthur and shows him her prowess with her katana. Think Lara Croft.
Rum Baba, Genie of the Lamp (M) Lots of fun in this role for comic actor who can sing.
Char Siu, A Slave Girl (15/16) (F)
Wishee Washee, Errant Son to Widow Twankey (M) The comedy foil to Aladdin and Twankey. The Buttons/Tickles part.
Chop Suey, Lord High Executioner (M/F). Evil, fawning servant to Abanazer. Think Wormtongue.
Rick Shaw, a street urchin (Playing age 16) (M)
Ping Pong (A herald) M/F

About the auditions

The auditions are really informal - and hopefully fun. There will be a group warm up, a small amount of dancing just to check you can move to a beat. Then we will read from the script giving as many people as possible a chance to read for all the roles they are interested, and finally singing. You don't need to prepare a text but nearer the time the scripts will be available on here. Check back in a few days time!

About South London Theatre

The South London Theatre is a large, well-established, repertory-style non-professional theatre based in West Norwood, south east London and a member of the Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain.

The theatre was founded in 1967 in an old Victorian fire station and has been thriving ever since. We operate as a members' club and are therefore always keen to attract new faces to our organisation. We run two theatre spaces, called the Bell Theatre and Prompt Corner. The Bell Theatre is a traditional style proscenium arch theatre seating 96 and Prompt Corner is a flexible studio space seating between 30 and 60 people. Our aim is to produce 22 shows per year in the two theatre spaces and we are always on the lookout for new members to help us achieve this.

We also aim to provide as much variety as possible, with shows ranging from Shakespeare and historical plays, to modern comedies and new writing, with the odd musical or pantomime in between. All aspects of each production are run by the members themselves, so there is plenty of opportunity for everyone, not just on the stage, but behind the scenes, learning about lighting, sound, stage management and directing.

There is also a need for members to man the box office, front of house and the members' club bar. We produce an annual pantomime - with over 10,000 costumes in stock and a big budget, our pantos are always well received and reviewed. This year's pantomime - Aladdin - should be our best to date!
