Burglary for Beginners by Jem Solak
Directed by Paula Kelly
Bang, You're Dead by Paul Reakes
Directed by Lee Ridgeway
Performances: Tuesday 5th - Saturday 9th August 2008, Bell Theatre
In August at SLT, take a break from the darker side of the news headlines with a night celebrating the lighter side of criminal mischief at the SLT Crime Spree. While we’re not certain two plays constitute a spree, the serendipity of two pieces submitted independently of one another which take a humorous look at criminal behaviour deserved a double bill and a really catchy tagline – alas, SLT Crime Spree was the best we could come up with!
Bang! You’re Dead is the directorial debut of Lee Ridgeway and Burglary for Beginners represents the second production from the director/writing team of Paula Kelly and Jem Solak. While the plays are set decades apart, they both share a comedic approach to what happens when average people are caught up in crime and intrigue. Full of greed, drama, surprises, devious plans made and the same devious plans gone awry – or have they? – not to mention burglars, guns and a guy named Bob, the plays will keep you laughing and guessing until the very end.
So, escape the summer heat and worries of villains lurking in the bushes with a night of laughs where crime is turned on its head and you may actually find yourself feeling sorry for the criminals. Featuring new directors, an original script for the SLT stage, and many new faces (along with some familiar ones you know and love), it will be a night that will make you think twice about pursuing a life of crime (if you were nurturing any such ambitions) and leave you wondering just who the victims really are.
Bang You're Dead by Paul Reakes
A comedy thriller, set in the lovely home of Lydia and Theo Spink which is about to be burgled. Lydia knows this because she has planned the burglary with Marcus, her boyfriend. However, the arrival of her husband, Theo, with his secretary, Miss Trim, throws the plan into confusion. Or has it? Not everything is at is seems in this play full of surprises, laughs, sadness and a little gunplay. The only thing it lacks is scruples.

It should have been an uncomplicated job – breaking into the house of a wealthy art dealer to liberate some particularly valuable stamps: tidy, profitable, the perfect crime.
