Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen
Directed by Catherine Ellis
Performances: Tuesday 18th to Saturday 22nd August 2009, Prompt Corner
Ghosts explores the fate of a woman, typical of many of the Victorian era, denied the chance of achieving her full potential by a male-dominated society. Mrs Alving is a woman who has suffered and sacrificed greatly for and because of the obligations imposed on her by the institution of marrige. Denied the opportunity to live happily with her true love, over many years she fought tooth and nail to maintain a public facade and shelter her son from the profligations of her late husband, Captain Alving.
The play is set on the eve of the opening of an orphanage in her late husband's name - also designed to maintain the facade. Mrs Alving is haunted by the ghosts of the past. Finally she admits the suffering she has endured; firstly to her love, the Pastor; and finally, to her son. The play ends with a powerful emotional climax when Mrs Alving discovers Oswald's own terrible secret and is left with the most tragic and horrific decision a mother could ever have to make.
