Schweyk in the Second World War by Bertolt Brecht, translated by William Rowlinson
Directed by James Hough

Performances: Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd May 2009, Prompt Corner

Written by Brecht when in exile in America in 1943, this play is set mostly in occupied Prague in 1942, although we also have scenes in such diverse places as Hitler's HQ and frozen wastes near Stalingrad. This is a satirical tale involving Schweyk (a dog-dealer in Prague) who becomes increasingly embroiled with the occupying Nazi forces, to comic effect. He is, for example, subject to interrogation at the hands of the Gestapo; forced on a mission to kidnap a particular dog for an SS Lieutenant; imprisoned in a military prison; and ends up conscripted by the Wehrmacht, marching to the relief of Stalingrad.
