Ladies Down Under by Amanda Whittington
Directed by Caroline Doyle

Performances: Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd January 2010, Prompt Corner

In her 2005 comedy Ladies Day, Amanda Whittington introduced four sparky fish-factory workers from Hull who struck it lucky at Royal Ascot. Ladies Down Under is a sequel, in which the newly flush quartet set out on the trip of a lifetime to Australia. It’s sentimental and stuffed full of stereotypes, but good-natured and amusing enough to win as many fans as its predecessor.

Down-to-earth Pearl, label-addicted wannabe model Shelley, sweetly ditzy Linda and fretful, down on herself Jan are all off to what they hope will be the magical land of Oz. Shelley craves five-star luxury; Pearl seeks cultural enrichment, and Jan wants to catch up with her boyfriend Joe, the former fish-factory foreman, who has gone walkabout Down Under. Linda is too consumed by guilt over the big win to care much.

As they travel from Hull to the Gold Coast, trekking through the outback to Uluru and ending up in the bright lights of Sydney, they also make a journey of self-discovery with laughs and tears along the way.
