Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones
Directed by Jess Osorio

Performances: Tuesday 21st to Saturday 25th June, 2011, Prompt Corner

Humble Boy is a comedy about broken vows, failed hopes and the joys of beekeeping. Over the summer during which the play takes place Felix soon realises that his search for unity must include his own chaotic home life.

All is not well in the Humble household. Felix Humble, a Cambridge astro-physicist in search of a unified field theory, returns to his family home after hearing of the death of his father, where he discovers that his mother, Flora Humble, has got rid of all of her husband’s belongings, including the bees that he kept.

The reunion of mother and son is not as pleasant as one might expect and old animosity arises as Flora blames Felix for embarrassing her at James’s funeral. In addition he finds out that Flora intends to marry George Pye, who is the opposite of the intellectual and passionate James, and father of his ex-girlfriend Rosie, with whom he is reunited during the play.

Throughout the summer the distance between Flora and Felix grows and she relies on Mercy to befriend Felix and keep her informed. Felix sees through Flora’s agenda and finds that the gardener Jim, who is ignored by everyone else, is the only person he can confide in.
