South London Theatre Summer School - August 2006

Monday 31st July to Saturday 13th August and
Monday 15th August to Saturday 26th August

Following the successes of our recent production of ‘Stay With Me’ and it’s forthcoming transfer to Greenwich Playhouse for a professional run, The South London Theatre is delighted to announce this years Summer School that will be running during August.

The aim of South London Theatres’ summer school is to give children, age 13 to 17, in the local community the opportunity to grow and develop their confidence, team work and communication skills through practical theatre training leading to a showcase performance in a real theatre space.

Aims and objectives

At the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of..

  • Ways into text - enabling them to comprehend and animate the text.
  • How to use their voices to the best effect in a variety of theatre / classroom environments.
  • How to use their bodies effectively to enhance the story telling process.
  • Characterisation
  • Different genres of plays (including tragedy, comedy, classical, modern etc.) and the specialist skills required for interpreting and performing them.
  • The use of make-up and costume to enhance the performance.
  • The use of lighting, sound and other effects to enhance the performance.
  • Roles and responsibilities in the theatre, on stage and off.
  • The discipline, dedication, hard work and respect for the group and the individual required to mount a successful stage performance.
  • Some other specialist skills including juggling, stage combat and dance.
  • Heath and safety in a theatre.

Culminating in a showcase performance on the final Saturday of the course. Tickets for this performance will be available to the friends and families of the students at £3.50 each.

Course Structure

  • Monday to Friday plus final Saturday
  • 10am to 5pm with one hour for lunch (students will be required to bring a packed lunch each day).

Cost of Summer School

The fully inclusive charge for this 2-week, full time, summer school will be £125 per student and we have a maximum of 40 spaces available on the course.

Applications

The closing date for applications is 8th June 2006, after which time potential students will be invited to come along to meet the teachers and attend a short interview to enable us to select students that we feel will most benefit from the course. All successful applicants will be notified within a couple of days of their interview.

Payment

Payment for the course will be required in full by 8th July. This can be sent by cheque, made payable to South London Theatre, and addressed to Maria Bates, South London Theatre Summer School, 2a Norwood High Street, London, SE27 9NS.
