The reading panel were impressed with both the number of entries and the quality of the scripts, which did not make deliberation easy. The play scripts were read by all on the panel and, throughout the process, the scripts were anonymised so that the panel did not know the writers of each piece. When reading the plays, the plot, characters, dialogue and the overall impression were considered.
The panel then met to choose the plays to be considered for the shortlist. These were then re-read and each member scored the scripts, individually and without discussion. These scores were aggregated and the top six selected for the shortlist.
The plays chosen, in alphabetical order, are:
Aspidistra Resistance by Polly Churchill
Balloon Rising by Audrey Lindsay
Last Orders by Joe Laredo
Model Behaviour by L.A. Green
Mrs Brown’s Balham Boys (Musical Medium) by Michael Staniforth
The Moonlight Milers by Eddie Coleman
These shortlisted scripts will now be read by the final judging panel which includes Jamie Eastlake, Executive Artistic Director at Theatre N16, and Steve Harper, Literary Manager at Theatre 503.
The winner will be announced in the week commencing October30, 2017.
The winning script will be produced and staged at the Old Fire Station in August 2018.
Thank you to everyone who submitted a script and good luck to those on the shortlist.
