Swive (Elizabeth) – The Director’s Preview

Director Cal Beckett introduces our next production, Swive (Elizabeth) by Ella Hickson.  Swive (Elizabeth) was first performed only in 2019, so it’s very new! What made you want to direct it so soon after its debut at Shakespeare’s Globe? I was browsing in the National Theatre bookshop one weekend in early 2020, came across the script and was immediately grabbed by the opening lines: “My mother seduced a man so successfully that he altered the constitutional history of the country”. […]

Youth Theatre: Victorian Ghost Stories

A 3 day workshop for young actors aged 13+ culminating in a performance. We will be devising and performing a selection of ghost stories based on the Valancourt Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories; a collection of ghost stories, culled from rare 19th-century periodicals. Most of us know of A Christmas Carol, but there are plenty of spookier Victorian tales. During the Victorian era, it became traditional for publishers of newspapers and magazines to print ghost stories during the Christmas season for […]

Maryland. A play by Lucy Kirkwood

We’re delighted to have been given the opportunity to perform this important work, a half hour script-in-hand play by Lucy Kirkwood, originally performed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in October 2021. The play (which is being performed by other groups nationwide during the month of November only) aims to raise awareness concerning violence against women, and to raise money for the Rape Crisis Centre. We’re pleased to demonstrate our commitment to this movement; if angry, it is needed. We […]

Picnic At Hanging Rock – The Director’s Preview

Director Barry Hooper introduces our next production, Picnic at Hanging Rock, adapted by Tom Wright.  What drew you to directing this play? As an Australian, it is part of my cultural heritage. Since the Joan Lindsay book was published in 1966 and the film’s release in 1977, the mystery of what may have happened to the schoolgirls at Hanging Rock has seeped deeply into the Australian psyche. So much so that many believe it’s a true story rather than a […]

Wasted The Director’s Preview

Director Bex Law introduces our next production Wasted by Kae Tempest.  How did you discover this play and what about it inspired you to direct it? Kae’s work has been on my radar since they made Brand New Ancients at BAC, and their Glastonbury set a few years ago was amazing. When I found they’d written a play suited to SLT I couldn’t wait to get stuck in! The urgency and honesty of Ted, Danny and Charlotte’s story is perfectly […]
