SLT has four governing bodies

General Council, Members' Club (Bar) Committee, Building Preservation Trust and Youth & Adult Learning

General Council (GC)

GC comprises 12 volunteer positions elected by the membership. It is responsible for the day-to-day running of SLT and its theatrical output which covers the programming of shows chosen by a subcommittee (Theatre Committee, or TC). GC is also responsible for all theatre-related activities which include our Youth Theatre, Box Office and Front of House, theatre finance and maintenance, publicity and membership. To become a member of GC you must have been a full member of SLT for six months, be nominated by another SLT member and elected by the membership at a SLT General Meeting. Some supporting roles may be filled by unelected individuals who may be seconded to GC in order to attend meetings or parts of meetings. Some GC meetings are open, enabling members to attend as observers.

Members' Club Committee (BarCom)

BarCom comprises seven volunteer positions plus a general committee of volunteers and is responsible for running the theatre bar which is a private members’ club available to full SLT members on a regular basis, and also to ticket holders on show nights. It also oversees member social events. To become a member of BarCom, you must have been a full member of SLT for six months, be nominated by another SLT member and elected by the membership at a Members Club General Meeting.

Building Preservation Trust (BPT)

The BPT holds the lease to the Old Fire Station. Also predominantly made up of volunteers, it's responsible for the building maintenance and management and oversees the ongoing restoration following the £2,500,000 refurbishment. BPT employs a building manager who deals with day to day maintenance and all hire enquiries outside SLT activities. BPT recruits its members both from SLT membership and beyond in order to include the right expertise.

Youth & Adult Learning

The Youth & Adult Learning body is run by individuals employed to create learning and development opportunities on behalf of SLT and facilitate its popular youth classes. Positions are advertised externally and selections made according to employment legislation.

General Council Meetings

Regular GC meetings

GC meetings are held monthly, but a number of these are open meetings which members can attend to see how GC works. It’s a chance to learn more about GC’s discussions and activities, and also to see if it’s something you’d like to get involved in.

Open meetings are divided into open and closed sessions. A short Q&A will take place at the end of the open meeting, when observers can ask questions or comments. After this, the meeting will be cleared to allow GC to discuss any sensitive matters privately.

You may suggest an agenda item by emailing the General Secretary, or speaking to a member of GC who can add it on your behalf. The agenda deadline is 14 days before the meeting, and the agenda will be posted on the Agendas & Minutes page (button below) when confirmed. The General Secretary will archive all related documentation on our Agendas and Minutes page (button below).

Annual General Meetings

Full members of SLT are eligible to attend both the AGM and the Members’ Club AGM, which are usually held on the same evening. The date will be published around 8 weeks in advance of the meeting being held.

In advance of the meetings, we also publicise invitations to nominate members for official positions on GC and BarComm. Any full member with at least 6 months’ membership is eligible to stand for election, and if there is competition for posts elections will be held by secret ballot at the AGMs. (If there’s no competition for posts, members will be elected unopposed.)

The content of the meetings varies, but the Annual Reports are produced in advance of them to enable members to ask questions about SLT’s activities and financial position. The Chair of both GC and the Members’ Club (more commonly known as BarComm) will review the past year, but also look ahead to significant future events and changes.
