About South London Theatre - video

The South London Theatre (SLT) was founded in 1967

We've been thriving ever since. SLT is a large, well established, repertory style non-professional theatre based at the Old Fire Station in West Norwood. We operate as a members' club, and we're always keen to attract new faces to our organisation, whether on or off stage or in the audience.

We aim to produce at least 20 shows a year in an inclusive and varied programme, with shows ranging from Shakespeare and classic dramas to modern comedies and new writing, with at least one musical and a couple of family shows for good measure.

All aspects of each production are run by our members

There’s plenty of opportunity for everyone, not just on the stage but also behind the scenes where you can learn about lighting, sound, stage management and directing. We also need members to run the box office, front of house and the members' club bar.

Since our £2 million refurbishment in 2016-2018, we are committed to opening up this wonderful community asset to a wider audience. We're currently developing our strategy to increase both adult and youth learning to bring a more diverse audience in to enjoy, celebrate and benefit from the arts and all our activities.

Our Shows

How we put on a show

The vast majority of our shows are chosen through an open submission process, when we invite would-be directors to submit plays for selection by our elected Theatre Committee (TC).

How we've funded SLT

Our day to day funding comes from a combination of ticket sales, membership fees and hire revenue, but with an historic, partially-listed building such as ours there are always expenses to be met for maintenance and improvements. Funds for this continue come from a variety of sources, including generous donations from members and friends.

For our restoration we also received substantial funding from the Heritage Lottery and Architectural Heritage Funds, Lambeth and the City of London, the Garfield Weston and Foyle Foundations, the Horseman Trust, Greenwood Projects, Thomas Ford & Partners, and Ash, who carried out the restoration.
