Casting: The Crucible

Director Yohann Philip introduces his cast for a new take on Arthur Miller’s 20th century classic
A huge "thank you" to everyone who auditioned in person or sent in a tape. The generosity, talent and spirit of the SLT community never fails to inspire me. Casting is always the hardest part, and I’m so grateful to everyone who gave their time and energy to this process. I’m thrilled with the company we now have, and I can’t wait to get started.
The Crucible may be based on the real-life historical events of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, but our production places the story in a stark, timeless world of crumbling stone. By stripping away the period trappings, we can shine a light on the raw dynamics of fear, suspicion and power that sit at the heart of the play. Miller’s themes feel just as urgent today in 2025 as they did in 1953, echoing our present societal issues of mob mentality, groupthink and cancel culture.
Assistant Director Sophie Davies and I feel incredibly lucky to be working with such a brilliant cast. Together, we can’t wait to bring one of Miller’s greatest works to life on the SLT stage this November.
