Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 play A Doll’s House scandalised society when its central character Nora leaves her stifling marriage and, most controversially at the time, her children. Stef Smith reframes the same storyline by setting it in three more recent eras (1918, 1968 and 2018) and asks how much has really changed since for women, who still carry the bulk of emotional labour in their relationships.

The structure of the play is unusual; the cast calls for three female actors, each of whom plays Nora in one era and Christine in another. The three timelines weave throughout the play, on occasion changing between eras multiple times within a conversation. The actors change between their Nora and their Christine by changing mode of speech and posture, but no costume changes. The male actors each play their single character in all three eras, again denoting the differences by posture and speech.
