Auditions FAQ
Can anyone audition for SLT shows?
Yes - our auditions are free and open to all, regardless of experience. You are simply required to register for your place and prepare any audition pieces as instructed. All the information to do both should be linked to the audition notice.
I’m under 18 - can I audition?
Yes, if the role is age-appropriate, but you must contact the director in advance as you will need to be chaperoned throughout the audition (and subsequent rehearsals). The chaperone can be your parent or guardian.
Do you have to be an SLT member to audition?
No, but if you’re cast in a show it’s mandatory for you to take out Full Membership (concession rates are available) before the first rehearsal.
Find out more about membershipDoes SLT pay people taking part in shows?
SLT is a non-professional community theatre; we pay neither actors nor backstage crew for their involvement in shows and do not pay travel expenses. We make theatre for the love of it.
What form do auditions take?
This will depend on the director and the play. Most auditions tend to be in groups, so that the director can see how would-be actors work together in a variety of scenes, but sometimes a director may wish to see auditionees individually.
When will I hear back from the director?
We aim to respond to every auditionee with a decision within a week of your audition. If you impress at the first audition, you may be asked to attend a call-back a few days later. If you're unsuccessful do be assured that with over 20 shows per year, we have plenty of other opportunities - including backstage opportunities!
Can't see any auditions?
If no audition information is shown below, we may have cast all the shows for now. With over 20 shows per year however, you can keep this page bookmarked, or use the form below to join our mailing list.
Auditions: Nora: A Doll’s House
By Stef Smith after Henrik Ibsen
Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 play A Doll’s House scandalised society when its central character Nora leaves her stifling marriage and, most controversially at the time, her children. Stef Smith reframes the same storyline by setting it in three more recent eras (1918, 1968 and 2018) and asks how much has really changed since for women, who still carry the bulk of emotional labour in their relationships....
