About the role

Angel is written as a British Pakistani child. For this role, we are looking for an adult performer of South Asian heritage and welcome submissions from across the South Asian community.

The play is a comedy set around a primary school nativity production. The adult actors initially play seven-year-old children performing the nativity and later play their parents. The actor playing Angel also plays Angel’s mother in the final scene.

Angel is bright, lively and fully embedded in her class cohort. Whilst she is challenged by some continually shifting friendship politics, she is eager to do well in the nativity to impress both her friends and her family. The role includes singing Christmas-carol melodies with new narrative lyrics.

Performances and rehearsals

Performances are at South London Theatre, 2A Norwood High Street, London SE27 9NS:

8pm: 10–12 and 15–19 December 2026
2:30pm matinees: Sunday 13 and Saturday 19 December

There is no performance on Monday 14 December.

Regular rehearsals are:

Wednesdays, 20:00–22:00
Fridays, 20:00–22:00
Sundays, 16:45–20:15

Our get-in, when the production moves into the theatre, is Sunday 29 November.

Candidates should also expect additional evening rehearsals in the theatre between 30 November and the opening performance, principally from 19:00–22:30 on weekdays, with a possible evening call on Sunday 6 December. The detailed final-period schedule will be confirmed with the successful performer.

A note about the material and company

The script contains several references to Angel’s Pakistani heritage, including brief references to mild tensions between her family and a neighbouring Indian family. Related material appears when the actor plays Angel’s mother.

Angel’s heritage is part of her family circumstances and experience, but it is not her sole dramatic function: she is fully embedded in the class and its friendship groups.

We also want to be transparent that, as currently constituted, the rest of the acting company and core production team are white. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive rehearsal room, and we welcome any questions or conversation about the production before submission.

How to audition

Anyone who previously auditioned for the production is very welcome to submit a self-tape for Angel. All submissions will be considered specifically against the requirements of this role, so a previous casting decision does not rule anyone out.

As we need to complete casting promptly, this round will be conducted by self-tape rather than through an in-person audition. The self-tape instruction pack is available here.

Please submit your tape by 17 October 2026 to guy@southlondontheatre.co.uk. If you are interested but cannot meet the deadline, please contact us as soon as possible.
