August 6th, 1939. Europe teeters on the brink of war. Ten strangers are lured to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast.

Cut off from the mainland, with their generous hosts Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a terrible crime. When one of the party dies suddenly they realise they may be harbouring a murderer among their number. Then another of the party dies. And another.

One by one they are picked off. Who will survive? Who will be "acquitted too late"? And who is the killer? Agatha Christie's finest murder mystery, adapted for the stage by the Queen of Crime herself.

Director: Alistair Simpson

Performances: 20 - 24 Jan 2026

First Rehearsal: 19 Oct 2025

Characters:

Tony Marston: (M, 20-30). Isn't quite sure what's going on, but he's enjoying it regardless. This isn't the party he was promised - this talk of murder should liven it up!

Vera Claythorne: (F, 25-30). Tells herself she's lucky to be here. She needs this job, even if that means listening to the old dears ramble on for hours. They must never know.

Philip Lombard: (M, 30-40). Seems far too calm given the circumstances. A man used to adventure, who swaggers across the island with a smirk and a wink.

William Blore: (M, 30-40). Is here to keep everyone safe, unfortunately. A former copper, tasty in a fight, he has a cunning plan he isn't quite bright enough to implement.

Dr Edward Armstrong: (M, 40-50). Specialises in, and suffers from, nerves. On the mainland he's a successful man and he spends his time on the island trying to find a way back.

Ethel Rogers: (F, 40-50). Is trying, unsuccessfully, to stay calm. She lives in mortal fear that her new employers will check for dust on the landing, and mortal fear of something else.

Thomas Rogers: (M, 40-50). Doesn't understand what his wife is so worried about. He reasons that if you bow and scrape enough, the masters won't notice a few cut corners.

Emily Brent: (F, 50-60). Sees wickedness in every shadow, and the Lord hateth the wicked. Miss Brent is enveloped in an aura of righteousness and unyielding principles.

Florence Wargrave: (F, 60+). Is supposed to be recuperating. A retired judge, Dame Wargrave tries to take control of the deteriorating situation as the body count rises.

John McKenzie: (M, 55+). Old soldiers never die, but John is fading fast. After losing everything he loved in the Great War, they say the lonely old general has started seeing ghosts.
