The god Dionysus comes to his birthplace in retribution against those who refuse to honour him as a god, notably his cousin, the king, Pentheus. The audience watch how Dionysus, usually known as the god of wine and ecstatic revelry, enacts revenge by invoking the female inhabitants, including Pentheus’ own mother, in an act of unspeakable savagery.

Characters:

Dionysus: The shape shifting god of wine, ecstatic revelry, of the theatre, of excess. Male/female 30s

Pentheus: The king of Thebes, brittle and psychologically troubled. Male 20s

Cadmus: The old former king of Thebes, willing to embrace the new cult. Male 60+

Tieresuas/Messenger: The blind old seer who also embraces the cult / a slave in Pentheus’ household. Male 60+

Agave: Pentheus’ mother, driven wild by Dionysus. Female 40+

Herdsman: A local cattle-herder. Male/female 30+ (doubles as a non-speaking guard)

Soldier: In Pentheus’ army. Male 30+

Chorus of Bacchae: Celebrants of Dionysus, eight in number, including the chorus leader, musician and singer. They speak or sing choral odes as they move/dance.
