Chameleon is a comedy that explores the surreal experience of being a person of colour and having to contort and adapt yourself to fit in to society. It’s also about the absurdity of our online, social media-driven world, how we treat ourselves and others online, and the false expectations we burden ourselves with.
The play takes place in a flat in South London, where a group of social media stars all live together. Our central character is Akash, the newest member of the group with the most to prove. He lives with Eros, the egotistical hearthrob himbo, Botanist, a self-help diva with a dark secret, and Z, an agent of chaos and the most followed member of the group. Then we have Sati, Akash’s childhood friend, a political and community activist trying to get Akash to engage with real life and the battles on his doorstep. And finally, we have Iggy, Akash’s talking pet chameleon and only honest friend. He’s got big ideas, no filter and a dry sense of humor.
We follow Akash as the pressure to grow his following intensifies, the line between adaptation and self-erasure starts to blur, and Akash begins to realise that the internet doesn’t reward authenticity - it rewards the best performance.
The play will use live feed to create some of the streaming/online scenes.
Director: Kyle Marsh
Performances: 15 - 19 Sep 2026
First Rehearsal: 5 Jul 2026
Characters:
Akash: M, 20s-30s, South Asian heritage. A mid-tier fitness and lifestyle streamer living in an influencer content house. Intelligent, image-conscious and emotionally repressed, Akash has built a career on carefully curating a version of himself designed to appeal to a broad online audience. Beneath the confidence is deep insecurity and exhaustion from constantly code-switching and adapting himself to survive online and socially. The role requires an actor with strong emotional range, capable of moving between charisma, comedy, vulnerability and psychological deterioration. Comfortable handling direct address, rapid dialogue, and sustained stage presence.
Sati: F, 20s-30s, South Asian heritage. Akash’s oldest friend and moral counterweight. A community organiser fighting against the gentrification of their neighbourhood. Warm, politically engaged and emotionally direct, Sati sees through Akash more clearly than anyone else. The role requires emotional intelligence, grounded realism and strong chemistry with Akash. Sati carries much of the emotional and political heart of the play.
Iggy: M, 20s-30s, South Asian heritage. A chameleon and Akash’s closest confidant. Funny, sharp, provocative and deeply observant. Iggy acts as friend, conscience and antagonist — constantly challenging Akash’s compromises and self-presentation. Iggy may be performed through puppetry, projection, physical theatre, or voice work depending on staging. The role requires vocal rhythm and comic timing, with the ability to shift suddenly into emotional or unsettling territory. Doubled with Leon.
Leon: M, 20s-30s, South Asian heritage. A charismatic new influencer who joins the content house midway through the play. Leon appears to effortlessly embody everything Akash struggles to perform. There is an uncanny quality to Leon — simultaneously magnetic and unsettling. The actor should possess natural charisma alongside an ability to subtly destabilise a room. Doubled with Iggy.
Botanist: F, 20s-30s. A wellness and lifestyle influencer with a large online following. Calm, intelligent and highly curated in public, but privately struggling under the pressure of representation and perfection. Actor should balance satire with emotional vulnerability.
Eros: M, 20s-30s. A political commentator and streamer. Charming, articulate and performative. Simultaneously sincere and self-serving. Projects confidence and ideological certainty while clearly enjoying status and attention. Strong comic instincts and confidence with language essential.
Z: M/F/NB, 20s-30s. A hugely successful gaming and internet drama streamer. Hyper-online, chaotic and funny, with an anarchic relationship to fame and internet culture. Z speaks in rapid, breathless monologues that feel like scrolling through social media in real time. The role requires excellent comedic timing, strong vocal dexterity and improvisational energy.
