Following the German invasion of the Channel Islands in 1940, the Becquet family’s Guernsey home has been requisitioned for German officers and in 1943 when the play is set, the family is living in a small coastal cottage. As widowed matriarch Jeanne navigates the dangerous game of the new commander’s attraction to her, her daughter-in-law Lily discovers a mysterious young man washed up on the shore. Wracked by fever, the man remembers nothing, including his own name; with equal probability that he is British or German. Lily and Jeanne’s young daughter Estelle convince her to shelter him until his memory returns. But harbouring this fallen angel threatens the modicum of safety and stability Jeanne has wrung from her family’s dispossession.

Director: Lisa Thomas

Performances: 13 - 17 Jun 2023

First Rehearsal: 2 Apr 2023

Characters:

Jeanne Becquet : F, 40s+ – must be old enough to have a son who is married. An attractive woman with a core of steel, but a moveable moral compass.

Lily: F, 20s – Jeanne’s daughter-in-law – a working class Londoner of Jewish descent who is aware of the danger she faces if her religion is uncovered.

Estelle: F, 10, but should be played by a small, young-looking adult. A significant role – fearless and bold – she is often prepared to say what the adults won’t admit

Lake: F, any age from late 20s upwards. The housekeeper, a plain-speaking local woman – there is some humour to be wrung from this role.

Major Von Pfunz : M, 30s to 50s – a German officer. In love with Jeanne. A complex man, initially coming across as slightly stupid, he is at turns cultured and emotionally vulnerable but prepared to ruthlessly assert his power when necessary. I don’t want a caricature.

Gabriel: M, 20s – apparently innocent, angelic. Speaks perfect English and German. He apparently has no memory but arouses suspicions that he may be more than he may seem to be.
