“I just think it’s, you know, important to look at the good things that are happening as well.” In the cramped, crumbling Brightline office, four volunteers spend a few hours every Tuesday night on the phone telling strangers that everything is going to be okay.
As the outside world disintegrates, they teeter on the edge of their own personal catastrophes. Their hopes and fears become entangled as they try, desperately, to connect with the callers and with each other.
Described as “hilariously bleak”, “desperately funny” and “ultimately hopeful” (and it is all of those things!), this 2019 play is about the struggle for optimism and community amid the chaos of a world falling apart.
APPLICATIONS FOR AUDITIONS FOR THIS SHOW ARE NOW CLOSED .
Please be aware that the director won’t blind cast on playing age and gender for this play. If you’d like to audition for the part of Joey, you must be at least 18 years old.
Director: Cal Beckett

First Rehearsal: 17 Sep 2023
Characters:
Frances: (F, mid to late 30s) Optimistic, enthusiastic and nurturing Brightline team Leader who takes her responsibilities seriously and has time for everyone in her team. Frances is heavily pregnant throughout the play.
Jon: (M, early to mid 30s) Experienced team member who is much more cynical than Frances, but loyal to Brightline’s mission. He develops a big brotherly, bantering friendship with Joey. Learning to play the trombone, encouraged by husband Andy.
Angie: (F, 20s) Well-meaning, enthusiastic young probationer who has a difficult past and family background. Bit of a space cadet, but keen to do well at Brightline and connect with callers.
Joey: (M, playing age 17) Still at school, on work experience. Wants to do well, get involved and connect with the team. Young but not immature. Has ambitions to be a graphic artist, so draws a lot.
