In folklore, pelican mothers feed their young on their own blood. Today, four sisters are trying to come to terms with their mother’s death – and divide their mother’s house between them. Mum’s presence still seeps through the ceiling and the floors. The Pelican Daughters are home for the last time.

First performed in 2019 and produced in collaboration with Complicite, this play written by The Wardrobe Ensemble is a blunt, beautiful and funny exploration of family, grief, entitlement and trust. You can love your siblings, but you may not always like them, and when conflict springs between you and the people that know you best, you can only hope that blood really is thicker than water.

Director: Han Evans

Performances: 27 Sep - 1 Oct 2022

First Rehearsal: 10 Jul 2022

Characters:

Joy: 35-45, female. The eldest Pelican. Joy wants a baby. The first married, the first settled down. Would do anything to start a family of her own. Anything.

Storm: 30-40, female. The caretaker. Storm wants to be seen. Uses PowerPoint as a communication tool, and was the last person to hold their Mum’s hand.

Sage: 25-35, female. The artist. Sage wants to be paid. Couch-surfing from exhibition to installation to poetry reading. Mum’s favourite (she told her herself).

Maya: 18-25, female. The youngest. Maya doesn't want anyone to find out her secret. Living the perpetual gap year life since she left secondary school.

Derren: 35-50, male. Joy’s husband. Chinos and a button down. From Swindon and quite likes it there, thank you very much.

Dodo: 20-35, male. Maya’s new boyfriend. Free-spirited, new age American. Tie-dye, vegan leather, and magic mushrooms

Luke: 18-25, male. The only Pelican son. When you get told you’re trouble for long enough, you start to believe it.

Solicitor/Granny/Lara: 20-45, any gender. A meticulous solicitor, the Pelican matriarch out on day release, and her forgotten minder

This is very much an ensemble piece, so most actors will be needed for most rehearsals. All characters can be played by any ethnicity. Genders are presentation indicators only, any actor suitable will be considered for any part.

MUM will be played by each of the Pelican siblings at various points in the play, so all those auditioning for those roles should look at pieces that feature MUM also.

Please email the director to confirm an audition slot on either of the dates, including your filled-in audition form. If you are unavailable during those audition times but you’d still like to be considered, please email anyway and accommodations will be made if possible!
