New Ticket Prices – Questions and Answers

20 Dec 23

Q. Why are we increasing ticket prices again?
  1. Although our financial position is pretty sound, we want to keep it that way.  At the start of the pandemic, we benefited from a dispensation from Lambeth Council who had issued the majority of the loans that we took out for the refurbishment of the theatre. This meant that for a temporary period, we only had to pay the interest on the loan with no capital repayments, but this will change at the start of 2024.
  2. In addition, it will come as no surprise that our energy costs are much higher than they were back in 2019, so we need to be sure that our income exceeds our costs in order to pay those bills.
Q. Why are we introducing early bird pricing?
  1. We’re very lucky to have a loyal customer base that regularly attends our shows, but many tickets are booked at the last minute. This means that on the Sunday before the show, when we look at the sales figures we’re often wondering if there will be enough people to make up a reasonable audience! Usually we’re fine, but we hope the new pricing will encourage people to book early and give cast and crew the reassurance that they’ll have a decent-sized audience to play to.
Q. Why have we removed concession ticket prices?
  1. We feel that our flexible £5 Wednesday ticket gives enough opportunity for those less able to afford the full price ticket to come along to one of our shows. This offer is open to all who need it, rather than those that meet a particular criterion such as their age.
Q. What’s the deadline for the reduced price early bird ticket?

The early bird tickets will come off sale 10 days before the first public performance of the show. Normally our shows run Tuesday to Saturday, and we have a new show every fortnight, so the last opportunity to buy an early bird ticket is the Sunday immediately after the Saturday night performance of the previous show. So if you’re seeing a show, you can buy an early bird ticket for the next one.

Q. Is it possible to exchange an early bird ticket to a different day of the week less than 10 days before the show starts?

Yes – if you’ve made the commitment to come to a show, and then something happens to make your first date impractical, then you can exchange the early bird ticket to a different day at no extra cost. This should help those people who work shifts on a rota that’s not confirmed more than 10 days in advance. Email boxoffice@southlondontheatre.co.uk to let us know what you need to change

Q. I struggle with online booking, does this mean I can never benefit from the reduced rate tickets?
  1. No, there are a couple of things you can do:
  • You can book for the next show when you’re visiting the theatre for another show, as we normally have tickets available at least two months in advance.
  • If you’re a member or a supporter of the theatre, then leave a message on the box office voicemail 020 3757 6111 stating your full name and the show you wish to attend, and we’ll reserve a ticket for you at the early bird discount as long as you contact us at least 10 days before the show starts. You’ll need to pay for your ticket by credit or debit card when you arrive at the theatre on the show night, and we would ask that you do so at least 15 minutes before the show starts.
Q. I’m on a low income, so what happens if the Wednesday night Flexible tickets sell out?

We’ll keep an eye on the Wednesday night demand, and if we find that the Wednesday nights are selling out on a regular basis we’ll consider extending the Flexible ticket offer to another night – but this will depend upon the demand, so it’s not guaranteed.

Q. Will there still be family tickets for the Youth and Christmas shows?

Yes, but, as many of these are booked well in advance of the show there will not be an early bird discount for these. The eligibility will change to say that two of the family members must be aged 18 or under, but we’ll also continue to offer a discount to members and supporters.

Q. I regularly organise a group of vulnerable people to attend a show, but the new pricing structure will prohibit us coming along - is there anything you can do?

The first recommendation would be to book early on our Flexible Wednesday ticket, but if this doesn’t work for you, then send an email to boxoffice@southlondontheatre.co.uk or leave a message on 020 3757 6111 and we’ll get in touch to see what we can do to help.
