Preview: Chameleon

Chameleon was written over the course of nine months, but the idea had been in and out of my mind for several years. The play is partly informed by my own experiences growing up in London, partly informed by people and behaviours I’ve observed online, and partly a response to events that occurred on streets around the UK in the summer of 2024.

It’s been an amazing experience! I’ve been very lucky to have an amazing cast who have all contributed massively to the process as well as brilliant insight from Assistant Director Kelly Q. I’d say that we’ve tried to create the play in a collaborative and explorative way, which has largely made my job very easy! Overall I’m just grateful to have so many people both inside and outside the rehearsal room who have really invested their time and creativity to bring it to life.

Chameleon explores a few themes, such as how we find and define our identity in today’s “always online” world, what we sacrifice in pursuit of our dreams, and how we seek meaningful connection in a transactional society.

Our central character is Akash (Aranan Wijayasooria), the newest member of the group with the most to prove. He lives in a house with other ContentKingz-sponsored influencers Eros (Fabian Anderson-Graham), the egotistical heart-throb himbo, Botanist (Thea Walcott McKay) a self-help diva with a dark secret, and Z (Tony Muzanechita), an agent of chaos and the most-followed member of the group.

Then we have Sati (Jeevan Ravindran), Akash’s childhood friend, a political and community activist who tries to get Akash to engage with real life and the battles on his doorstep. Iggy (Abi Selvakumar) is Akash’s talking pet chameleon and only honest friend. He’s got big ideas, no filter and a dry sense of humour. Finally, there’s Leon (Tirusanthan Thiruvilangam), a self-assured new streamer added to the house, with a determination to disrupt everything the others hold dear.

We discussed this as a company, and we hope that the audience will leave with a desire to connect with people close to them, that they won’t judge themselves by unrealistic standards and pressures and ultimately, practice both self-love and care for their local communities.
